Two of our radiators are extremely noisy - sounds like a howling or whistling whenever the heating is on. The other radiators are fine. The only difference between them is that the noisy ones are fitted with thermostats. Any ideas as to how to get rid of the noise?

You could get rid of the thermostats, or close the lockshield valves till the noise stops.

Where is the lockshield valve? It doesn't seem to make any difference to the noise whether or not the thermostat valve is open or shut.

he said "lock shield valve" not TRV, the lock shield valve is the one on the other end of the rad.

Adjust the balance valves(lockshield).turn them to closed, then open them, slowley, about a quarter turn!,do the same to the other rad,...then bleed them, that should stop the noise, the trick is to balance them.

smpearman,
You don't mention when this problem started. Have you recently installed the TRV's or upped the pump speed setting??

I had this on my dining room Rad when I fitted TRV's throughout the house (except the Hall "control" radiator).

The plank that I am - I fitted this one at the outlet side of the Rad - and it was not a "two way" TRV. It would play the trumpet voluntary every time the CH was pumping and the TRV was "away from closed" (demanding).

Fix was to drain down the system, and swap the TRV and Lockshield valves around.

Good luck and let us know how you get on
