Hi there

Never done any DIY before (yes really) so please be gentle :)

What should I do to these two walls in my yard to make them look tidier?

Hoping it's something I can do myself rather than getting a handyman in.

Is it just a question of painting with external wall paint? Or do I need to use something like plaster (but I'm guessing not exactly plaster... said I was a beginner) to even out the surface first?

Thanks for any advice!

Stiff brush , not a wire brush , and a scrape to remove any loose paint . Not quite clear from the pictures but if there is any loose or missing pointing replace that with new , something like 5:1 sand and cement or just get a small bag of ready mix , then a few coats of masonry paint.

That's really helpful! Yes I think there is a bit of loose pointing so will have a go with a bag of ready mix.

With regards to the pointing , it's pretty straightforward . Rake out any loose stuff preferably to a depth of an inch , brush out , dampen and press the mortar in firmly. Don't worry too much about getting it to look perfect with the trowel just wait a few hours and brush the joints with a soft brush to smooth it all out.
