Oil watchman batteries do not last

We replace the 4 AAA batteries in the copper tube for the watchman oil level sensor without any problems However, the new batteries do not last more than a few weeks - this has happened several times and the batteries are good (and from several different sources so it is not a bad batch).

There are several references to this problem on the internet. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Change the complete gauge for a later one that uses standard batteries.
You have compromised the insulation of the original battery pack and are suffering from current leakage.
