Hi, I have recently moved into a new house which has a olmypic firebird oil fired boiler, the boiler heats the radiators and water fine but when its switched off it seems switch on and off by its self only for a few minutes at a time but numerous times a day, is this normal ? there is also a smell of the fuel oil but no obvious sign of a leek. can any one help please.

It really depends on which part of the system is actually switched off.

Could it still be getting a demand to heat the Domestic Hot Water cylinder or have both CH and DHW been turned off at the programmer/timer?

Does sound like the boiler is getting a back-feed all the time via a faulty motorized valve & the boiler is cycling on & off on the boiler thermostat. As for you oil smell, it may just be a slight micro leak on the oil supply pipe or a hose.
Both quite easy to fix.
Hope that helps?

Thanks for your replys guys.

The boiler comes on when there is nothing asked for on the programmer, is it possible that there is some sort of built in frost protection that is going wrong ? I traced the smell to a weep from the mixture screw, changed the O ring and it was fixed.

regards john
