Hi just moved into a 1900 house with an origional fire opening.
Was hoping to re instate the fire but have found a pipe that comes up through a concrete? Base in the fire pit. Also not sure all that should be there is there!? It has a grate on the front with a pull out area but not a great deal else. I know I need the chimney swept and checked etc but as for the pipe and missing bits don't know where to start. Any advise??? We only want to maybe burn a few fire logs now and then.

Could be a gas pipe for an old gas fire that isn't there any more. Be careful though as it could be live.

Can you post a photo of it? If you are at all unsure then you should get a Gas Safe registered engineer to come and look, they should be able to remove the pipe and cap it somewhere else.
