I'm looking at making door openings for the first floor of my extension, and looking at how the place has been built (the wall plate for the hipped roof sits below ceiling level by some margin) it occurs to me that I'm going to have to take the opening all the way up to the top of the wall, leaving only a lintel bridging the gap. Is this going to cause me structural issues? I've heard a suggestion that the side wall holds the front and back walls together and that taking an opening all the way to the top might disturb this, causing them to fall apart. I thought this sounds unlikely, but wondered what everyone else's opinion is.

Provided the roof has been built correctly it will help tie the walls together.

There should be enough buttressing 'meat' left within the walls remaining to counter any knock-through weaknesses.

I suppose it could have a detrimental effect if you attempted to chop an opening flush against the outside wall. No one would be that daft though surely...?
