It will simply be the washer in the ballvalve needs replacing.
However, a new Part 2 ballvalve and float should cost no more than £8.
Its easier to replace the whole ballvalve to be honest.
Simply turn off the cold mains coming into your house, normally a stopcock either under the kitchen sink, or in the loft.
Once you have done this, simply swop the new ballvalve...No need to drain.
I hope this helps.

if you think the ball cock is dripping, fit a new one.

in this case it is not necessary to drain the tank.

ok cheers so best to just replace whole thing. out of interest how would i drain the tank?? and is there anything else it could be or is a leaking bal valve the only way that it would overflow?

yes, the reply I gave at Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:15 p.m.

if you want to drain the loft storage tank turn off the cold water to the ballvalve and open your taps to empty the tank, if you change the ballvalve you will need to draw some water off through the taps to get the water level down a bit so that you can set the level correctly

Depending on how your house is plumbed, you may only be able to drain the cold water storage tank through the hot taps, and maybe the bath cold tap.

Cold taps are often run straight from the water main.

so i shut of mains and open hot and cold tap???

when you turn off the cold main open kitchen cold tap to confirm main is off, open the bath cold tap if it is off you need to drain through the hot, as per previous post it depends on how things are connected, if the cold is still running and therefore connected to the tank drain through cold bath tap to save wasting hot water, obviously if tank was leaking badly you drain through both for speed
