Painting a decorative fire surround

Hi all,

I have bought a second hand MDF fire surround. It is to be used for decorative purposes only. It already has a colour on it but needs painting. Please can anyone tell me what paint I should use. I will obviously be giving it an undercoat first.

Hi emlo68

You need to know what kind of paint is on it.

Other wise I'd always go with an oil base first, MDF and water just don't mix.

How ever if there's a water based paint on it now no reason why you can't put the same on top.

Once undercoated, ordinary gloss or satin would be the obvious choices.
