I have been asked to lay a patio which will be around 100sqm.

The current grounds of the property has alot of clay under it, so im pretty certain there will be clay when i start digging down.

So should i lay a hardcore base then a 4" or 6" concrete base.

OR

a MOT base which will be whackered down.

The patio wont have any heavy traffic and is likely only to be used in the summer etc.

we did one this winter up near haywards heath in very heavy clay, with ground springs. We used mot, but laid it a lot thicker than normal. It was only for foot traffic but was a similar size. If you do a concrete base and you get any movement youre more likely to get the patio moving as a result.

Interesting as this is just round the corner in Handscross.
What thickness mot did you use.

we ended up between 200-300mm thick in some places. we normally do 300mm under driveways on clay.
