If i wanted to turn outside lighting on but only wanted it to come on if dark outside, is it best to use a photocell like ones on sale in screwfix?

yeah photocells are made for this purpose!

some on the market are really poor though so invest in a good one, ive seen loads of cheap nasty ones that dont last 2 minutes.

TBH I never looked, but it looks like a standard zodion photocell, which is fine.
