hi guys, I have just purchased a house built in 1974, its a detached 4 bed in need of modernisation, all the upstairs areas needed new carpets throughout, but other than that and the windows and general decorating, upstairs is fine...... or so I thought!!

having removed the original carpets I have found the floorboards fitted are only 16mm thick, and some have been cut out over time and replaced with other miss-matched boards of in places 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 18mm (but its mainly original 16mm flooring, I have been going round the floors screwing down the squeaky boards to eliminate the noises which has worked well for the most part, but there are some boards which are poorly supported where joists have been cut below to allow new piping to be run etc.

basically what I was wondering was if it was worth topping over the existing flooring with maybe a 6mm exterior plywood in 8" x 4" sheets?

I don't think we can afford to rip the original floor up and replace with 22mm flooring, not just because of the cost but because this is our home and we have nowhere else to live!

any thoughts appreciated!!

if anyone wants to move this to the flooring section please feel free, not sure if it will be better placed here or there?!

did my floors with 9mm plywood and a lot of screws, well worth the expense and effort.
shop around for the best price and aim to pay around £16.00 per sheet.8x4 9mm.

good luck.

Or take up all the floor boards, make a note of all water/electric and screw down 18mm ply.

Making sure there is not any compression joints or junction boxes being hidden.
