i always use building sand and normally about 1:4. others prefer sharp sand

You can get black sand that will give you a dark grey colour, usually stocked by roofing suppliers I believe.

trouble is it tends to tone down and looks naff after a while, as does cement dye

I always use building sand at 5 to 1 but if you want a more grey look you could use silver sand at 3 to 1 which would be nice and grey when dry.

Thanks for the replys. Ive started using 4-1 sand /cement and its drying a nice colour. and mine is kandla grey stone looks well once down.
