Potterton heat max combi receiver unit

The red light on the receiver unit is constantly on, showing R/F failed. The timer is not over riding, so having to put heating on manually from receiver unit. Instructions say to press manual button and temperature will then be controlled by transmitter unit but its not. Changed batteries in transmitter but still no joy. Does anyone know what may be the problem?
