power steering

Our Renault Espace power steering isn't working. Hydraulic fluid levels OK. Any ideas?

Have you checked the belt that drives it?

Belt is OK. The hydraulic pump is covered in hydraulic fluid. Do you think
this needs replacing?

I think that's pretty definite. There shouldn't be fluid all over it.

Thanks for your help Joe 90. Found a second-hand hydraulic pump for £60
plus VAT with 3 months warranty. How easy would it be to fit this myself?

This morning power steering suddenly fine. Does this mean power steering pump ok? It hadn't been working for the previous 10 days.
Anyone any idea what's going on? Not sure whether to leave well alone or change pump anyway.

is it an electric pump rather then one thats driven by the engine?
could explain why it has an intermittant fault
