Preparing wall prior to tiling

Im changing a bath soon and have ripped,off all the old tiles. This has left the wall slightly damaged and I noticed a bit of water damage to the plaster in one small spot
Before I install my bath will I need to prepare the wall or will the new tiles with good adhesive do the trick

I would personally tank it before tiling or at least put waterproof matting up. Make sure you use a full bed of adhesive. I regards to the wall damage, if you make right with 12 mm Hardiebacker then it will be a dream to tile.
