Problem solvers! Hearth made of slabs..How to finish nicely?

Hi all

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes....

The previous owners of our property have used riven slabs as a hearth....

I'm looking for creative ways to get a nice smooth look on these to give a uniform slab that I could paint up.

Unfortunately ripping them out and laying a proper limestone hearth is not an option currently.

I was wondering if you have any clever ideas on what can be done here?

I was for example considering the use of a self levelling compound of some sort but not sure if that would give me the desired finish?
