I have a Vectra diesel 54 plate. The temperature gauge on the dashboard has stopped working but the heater is still OK. I have changed the temperature gauge sender but this has made no difference. The radiator does not appear to be getting hot but the car is running without any other problems. Any suggestions on what to try next?

In the olden days you had a sensor that was connected by a length of wire to the temp gauge and the sensor was almost always the problem, its a lot more technical than that now. The sensor likely feeds information to the engine ECU so if its running OK the fault probably either with the gauge itself, the ECU or the wiring from it.

Is it possible that the thermostat might be stuck in the closed position, which is why the radiator isn't getting hot? Went out in the car yesterday and gauge started to work, but then dropped back down to nothing.

In this weather the radiator would remain cool for most of the time especially with a common rail diesel which is very thermally efficient, for much of the time all the heat will be used by the heater only if the car is pushed hard will the thermostat open, the temperature gauge should still read hot.

Check that the water is circulating - it could be the water pump thats failed. When this happens the needle will occasionally swing high as a pocket of hot water manages some natural convection.

See if you can see the water flowing into the expansion bottle.

With the symptoms you've got its usually the sender / wiring though.

Some of those had two sensors one for the management and one for the gauge in the dash. Take the wire off the one for the gauge in the dash and with the ignition turned on connect it to the engine block.
The needle should rise don't leave it connected as soon as you see the needle rise disconnect (two man job). If it rises its the sensor, if it doesn't its a wiring/dash fault.

If in doubt check your Haynes manual
