We have just bought a house with Alpha CB24x boiler. The boiler is 14 years old and we will look to replace it when we can afford to. (Unfortunately the current schemes for free boiler replacement don't apply to us.)
The boiler is located in a bedroom on the first floor but the heating thermostat is controlled by a panel at the bottom of the stairs (see image).

The panel display is very faint and the vendor thought maybe it needed a new battery, but it is very much attached to the wall and we are not sure if it is controlling the boiler remotely or there is some wiring. The last thing we want to do is damage it.
But now we have a bigger problem: we think perhaps the panel battery has gone completely as the house is tropical temperatures and the only thing we could do was turn down the radiators and turn down the dials on the boiler a bit. (We can't do this too far because the boiler pressure drops, but that's another story.)
What I really need to know is whether this is a remote panel that we can remove or we need to worry about wiring behind it. Also, can anyone tell me what it is and how much a replacement might cost?
All advice appreciated (but please don't tell me to just get a new boiler as we don't have the money at the moment).
