I don't know if this is the correct forum but......

Today I had broadband installed at work.
Now my cordless phone doesn't work and the mains radio has bad interference.

Am I right in thinking the cordless phone and the router are probably using the same 2.4ghz frequency and this is why the phone won't work ?

The router, radio and phone are all powered from the same extension lead. There is only 1 mains socket available so everything has to be plugged in here.I wouldn't be at all surprised if the lighting ( 1 fluorescent ) isn't on the same ring, the whole building was rewired on a budget by the landlord about 20 years ago.

Have you got a broadband filter for the phone?

If you move the radio as far away from the router as possible, does the interference subside? If so, then the interference is being picked up by the aerial. If not, it's coming down the mains - you may have a problem with the router's power supply.

If it's the latter, try changing the power supply for another one (with the same voltage and a current output the same or higher than the original). Then you should contact the broadband provider and get a new one.

If it's the former, I suggest that you call your supplier because there are rules about equipment causing interference - it mustn't. That's why you see big ferrite tubes moulded onto power supply and computer monitor leads.

I forgot to say that I've been using this router ( and power supply ) at home for a few years without any issues

Hope you have a Broadband filter ready for when the interference starts again - and it will.

ps Do you have an alarm system at work that is connected to the same line?

It turned out to be the old laptop I'd taken in to set up the router. As soon as I plugged it in this morning the interference was back.Must have a dodgy power supply.
Fortunately I won't be needing it again anytime soon.

Do you?

the interference can also come off another subscribers line due to faulty equipment. when I was at bt, I was on a faults investigation to find an intermittent interference source knocking off almost 30 broadband circuits.

narrowed it down to one house, and the bloke refused to cooperate when I said he'd have to disconnect his equipment because "he'd paid for a TV box thing and was going to use it" neighbours were even offering to buy him a new box just to resolve it but the area manager told me to just remove his dropwire from the house to the pole altogether, then he mailed him some bumf about the communications act and a number to call when he was ready to talk about the terms of reinstating his service.

Yes to the filter,no to the alarm.
It's definitely the laptop causing the interference.I bought the laptop 2nd hand and it came with a non original power supply.

Anyway jobs a good un now :D
