Hi Guys

I'm removing an old boiler from a hearth in my kitchen, expanding the cavity up to head height and fitting a 90cm range cooker and extractor. I have a flexible hose with bayonet fitting from my range cooker about a metre long and will need to connect this to my gas supply. The problem is my gas supply to the old cooker is located outside the hearth brickwork. The Hearth is solid to the underside so getting a pipe beneath will be hard work. Could one of you useful chaps give me some guidance on the restrictions of running the gas hose through an opening in the side of the hearth so I can connect to a gas pipe? Would I have to take out enough to be considered a void? Would this need supporting? The hearth's side is about a foot and a half deep into the wall and about a foot wide.

Thanks Guys

I would not consider this a DIY job, in fact I am not sure you are legally allowed to carry out this type of work yourself. In any case the appliance part of the forum isn't really the best section to ask this question, perhaps plumbing & heating section might be a better place to get diffinitive advice.

A cooker hose is not suitable to run through a wall.It should only be used as the final connection and should hang in a U shape to avoid undue strain. You should get your gas supply extended to the back of the cooker and then connect the hose. This is restricted work and should only be done by gas qualified persons.

So even if I removed a foot high void on the wall of the hearth exposing the cookers side and hung the hose in a U from cooker fitting to a new connection point just outside the void?

If not you suggest a gas pipe to be run to meet the cooker, I'm assuming this pipe could be run through a void? I'd have to create the void first then have my gas fitter install the pipe.

You gas fitter will be able to run a pipe through to the rear of your cooker and sleeve the pipe as required. You could do the 1st method and as long as the hose is hanging correctly then that is ok,but it wouldn't look great with a big hole at the side of the cooker, but thats your choice.

Oh right (panic over), the hole to the side of the hearth would be covered by kitchen cupboards. I'm thinking of instructing the gas fitter to move the existing gas pipe as close as poss to the side of the hearth, I can then knock a void out of the side of the heath and loop the hose in a U from cooker to pipe. The whole thing will then live in a cupboard out of sight and where I have access to isolate if required. Any issues you can see with this? Is there anything guidlines around the U in the pipe?

Nothing wrong then with what you propose and the hose U shape is only a guide as long as there is no undue strain at either end.
