We are considering knock through from the Kitchen to the Dining Room at the rear of our house (1930's Brick built semi) - The wall in question also houses a chimney breast width 1470mm x 450 depth. We want to retain the breast above ground floor level (i.e.Bed room and roof space). Can this be supported by an RSJ and if so how far down from the ceiling would this pertrude into the room. the rest of the wall is load bearing so how would the rest of the above wall be supported.

Would we need a pillars or something.

many thanks

You really need an engineers report your local building control will only be happy if you suuply one.
Chimney breasts are extremely heavy and require proper support.
Good luck
Pete

Removal of wall and chimney at ground floor will require a fair amount of support and potentially larger foundations at sides.

Get a structural engineer round to give you a build regs suitable design
