Is it possuble to do the above? I have tried once already on a little dent that i have on my wall. I tried using filler then sanding it down, however, after doing this the paint around it has started to peal when sanding down the filler to blend in with the rest of the wall. Is there something that i have missed or is this just impossible?

The paint either has an adhesion problem or you are using a paper that is to coarse like aluminium oxide. Silicon carbide which has a chemical grit should be kinder to the wall a 240 grade would be fine or you could use some wet n dry, dry (not wet)
Presuming its not freshly applied paint as you'd obviously allow drying time.
