Hi,

I am looking at replacing the roof on my concrete sectional garage.

It is currently a flat roof consisting of corrugated asbestos sheets resting on concrete cross members (see pic).

I would like to construct a timber roof structure with decking type joists topped with plywood sheet and felt/membrane on top of that.

The reason for this is that I would like to easily walk around the roof too, as I have a tall hedge one side which I can’t access to trim otherwise.

For those that are wondering, currently I span the roofing sheets with my ladder, put a decking plank over the rungs and walk precariously along this with my trimmer to get to the hedge. I have got Life Insurance, yes.

I would like to start drafting up plans for this modification, but it starts with whether the concrete cross members are sufficiently load bearing or not.

I am presuming that their primary purpose is to provide the walls with sideways rigidity to stop them bowing out/in.

However, would they also have sufficient strength to take the weight of wooden joists, plywood panels, felt/membrane and myself + hedge trimmer?

My initial thoughts were to simply rest the joists, lengthways, on the concrete cross members, but now I am wondering whether they would be up to the job and whether I need to put extra load bearing cross members in?

The length of the garage is about 6m, with the back end being sectional concrete walls, the front end having a fairly thick ‘lintel’ above the garage door, and 3 more concrete cross-members in between. The max distance between any cross member/end is about 1.5m.

The span is approximately 3m.

Many thanks for any advice..

Andy
