ESPECIALLY as the one valve you need isn't in any of you pictures.

My guess would be heavily chlorinated water and the op is in a block of flats running on pumped supply from the building.
Given the crusty state of most of the connections and other fittings shown in the pictures, you need far more than just a thermostat pocket.
The whole lot looks a bit of an abortion to be frank.... Nearly every non soldered connection looks like it needs some form of attention.
