Replacing sheet roof on terraced garage

Hi,

I have a garage in a run of terraced garages all sharing a continuous sheet roof (corrugated cement material, probably asbestos), with the sheets fitted with an overlap of a few corrugations.

I'm interested in making the garage a better working space, clean, dry and dust free etc, but not in converting it fully to a living space. I may wish to install a plasterboard ceiling under the roof.

The roof is leaky and cracked, and the edges of the sheets used do not line up with the edges of the property, ie. It would not be possible to completely replace my roof without replacing at least part of the neighbours roofs too. I was thinking something like galvanised coated steel or plastic sheeting with matching profile. I'd need to get this done professionally.

Its doubtful that my neighbours would want to replace their roofs, but does anyone know what my rights and options might be here?

Obviously I'd need to discuss it with them, but one side will be hard to track down, and could well be grumpy / obstructive, so I'd like to know how this works before bringing this up.

I obviously wouldn't want to do anything that would harm the integrity of neighbours' roofs.

Probably doesn't make a difference, but I should have mentioned - this is a "flat" type roof with a very shallow pitch - see pic.

People needing to replace roofs that don't fully belong to them must happen, surely?

Why don't you look into getting the old sheets coated with a liquid
waterproof paint.
