Salt is traditional as it's a preservative and helps keep the porridge fresh in the porridge drawer.

Had a quick gander in the Howdens catalogue, but couldn't see that any of their kitchen ranges had a 'porridge drawer'.

What in heaven's name is a porridge drawer? ;)

It's a drawer in which porridge is kept

I put it on after it's been made. How would it taste different if you put it in before it's made?

because if you put the salt in the water when making the porridge, the saltiness permeates into the oats.

just like cooking pasta or rice.

But it still tastes salty, and it all goes down the same way!

Have you ever boiled potatoes , without putting salt in the water before boiling them? Bloody tasteless when they come out. You just can't put the salt in to them afterwards (just doesn't taste the same) Same with porridge. Add the salt when your making it. You'll taste the difference. ;) ;)

OK, I'll try that.

Does it also work for the packet ones where you just add milk and microwave? :D

Another one here for salt in the milk before adding the oats....Then serve with honey and a double shot of Scotch.....The cheap supermarket stuff for cooking mind.....Oh and semi skimmed milk, I have to take care of my health..

The Rice Pud with Horlicks sounds great, I'll try it!

I might try it with a drop of scotch as well. Never thought of that.

A friend introduced me to porridge made with soya milk. I didn't like the idea when she mentioned it but being polite I agreed to try it.

Makes very tasty porridge. Worth trying.

Porridge oats, half milk/half water, tsp of honey, few raisins &
blackberries & a sprinkle of sunflower seeds, served very thick. Quality!
