Rover 45 TD stuck down clutch pedal

This problem of the 45 having a high clutch pedal is due to the master piston traveling to far back towards the bulkhead I presume.

Does that mean a retaining clip inside the master has broken or come loose ?

The piston can't come back too far or it would come out of the bore of the master cylinder. Then all the fluid would come out

Problem solved and I have a good clutch pedal !

Swapped the master. The pin knocks out and pipe pulls out of the master.

Collect any fluid and strain it through some paper towel to clean it.

Clean the rubber o ring and fit back on the pipe.

Refit the pipe and knock the pin back in.

With master refitted, pour the fluid back in and let gravity bleed any air out.

Master and slave are sealed units AFAIK, you have to replace the complete unit, and adjoining pipework, joint is made via a union in the middle of the pipework. Theoretically there shouldn't be any air in there as they are filled and bled at the factory.

I really don't know what causes the high pedal, assume its wear on the linkage, but it is a common problem on the 45. (25 was a cable clutch just to make life interesting!)

Indeed, the 45's clutch hydraulic system is a factory unit.

I got a hydraulic set of ebay from a seller who claimed it would fit but the pipe was about 10 inches to short.

Swapping the master worked so I now have a working clutch pedal.

Sadly the clutch is out of action again.

Went to move it and the pedal was sticking down again. Work it a bit and then started coming back up by itself.

Only thing is I can now get into gear, engine running, without using the clutch pedal. If I put it in gear and dip the clutch, I hear the sound of grating gears.

Will investigate tomorrow. Seems very strange to me.

You must love that car or you'd have scrapped it before now !

Easily the best car I've owned which includes, x2 mk2 Escort, x2 mk4 Cortina, x1 Orion. Yes, I used to be a Ford man!

The car will go to the scrappy sooner or later.

I had one back in 2006 as a temporary company car, top of the range, full leather etc. Roughest smelliest old diesel I've ever driven and so noisy above 60mph. Couldn't wait to give it back

Clutch fixed!

The release arm was seized in the release position so a few squirts of wd40 (water displacement formula 40 for those who've ever wondered) on the arm - tube joint to get fluid inside, a couple of taps of the hammer on the release arm tube, repeated dipping of the clutch pedal and all is well.
