hi I am removing an external wall to get into the extension which has been built , firstly I specifies the beam size but this is 5 inch wide so it will only span on the outside face of the blockwork. There is a 75mm cavity which I assume the extra 1 inch in width will be pushed into the cavity space but what I don't understand is if I can use a concrete lintel on the inside face as this is not load bearing as the property is a bungalow but the outside skin is holding up the wall plate. finally if there are any good links on how to go about this job it would be greatly welcomed as I have not done this before
thanks col

what is the exact beam size specified?

sometimes a s.e. will spec' a large single beam with a broad flange welded to the top web. this plate steel will then carry both leaves of masonry.

in answer to your first question: yes a builders lintel will be more than adequate to hold up a few courses of non load carrying brick or blocks.

what is the span?
