I'm told that a shower aerator reduces the amount of water used/required.

This seems like a good plan being on a water meter.

I run my shower off my combi boiler, so it can provide large amounts of hot water at mains pressure.

Is it possible to buy aerators that fit an existing shower head/hose, or would I need to buy a new complete shower head? The latter option will obviously be more expensive so I'd also like to know if it's worth doing first?

I appreciate that turning the shower force down would also reduce the water flow!

Hans Grohe sell such a shower head but the saving in water is extremely minimum it just adds air to the flow to give you a fizzy style spray.
