Small double glazing unit

Hi

We have had a new hardwood stable type door fitted recently (no why the long face jokes plz).

The door has a small apperture for fitting a glazing panel which we have temporarliy boarded up for the momment.

We would like to put a small DG unit - toughned outer for security

Any tips welcome on how I go about doing this.

Any local DG unit manufactuer will make you a unit to fit the opening. The question really is if the door will take it. The glazing rebate will most likely need to be deepened to take the extra depth of the unit.I had to do something very similiar in my house with some exsisting windows , although I had the units made with 14mm (or was it 16mm?)spacer bars rather than the more common 24mm.

You should have no problem fitting a sealed unit in there. The thinnest spacer bar is 6mm so 4-6-4 (14mm) is achievable. Be prepared to pay for 0.3 or 0.4 m/sq as this is usually the min. size. You will need both leaves toughened as its in a door.

Cheers- I phoned the local glaziers who were very helpful.

Measured tight to the aperture and then took a bit off for glazing blocks.

They recommended 4- 10-4 both panes toughened.

Have to wait a week for the order though.

Glad you got it sorted! 4-10-4 is ideal for this type of application - just make sure you're deducted the thickness of the glazing tape and beading from the rebate depth to ensure 18mm will fit. A week's about right for toughened - not many in-house toughening plants about really.
