We have got two Ei141 smoke alarms. The batteries need replacing (had electrical work done and the electrician left the alarms turned off). I know it sounds pathetic but we cannot get the lids off. In the instructions it says 'push screwdriver straight in to release catch und slide off cover'. The covers dont move and we are afraid of damaging them. Any helpful ideas. Thanks in advance.

Have you seen the little slot on the side of the smoke alarm where you have to insert the screwdriver?
If so once the screwdriver is in you need the push the entire detector away from where you put your screwdriver. This should seperate the detector from the base.
You may need to give the detector a bit of a bash to get it started.
