Hi

I will soon have my roof tiles replaced as part of an extension and choosing a new clay roof tile.

Are there any advantages of having a smooth faced roof tile compared with a matt / rough / sandblasted tile?

One main advantage straight away is...

The smooth surfaces of clay tiles, natural colored, engobed or glazed, do not allow airborne materials to accumulate. This helps to prevent the build-up of moss and other vegetation growth on the roof's surface.

And just to add some weekend humour if one may? :)

Smooth surface = no one can nick your ariel, if they slip off while trying? Right?
Pigeons will feel like they're standing on a slanted ice floor? No more p*o droppings? Right? Right?

*Les Dawson voice* I've still got it!! :)

I didn't get the latter part of the joke/comment however, I think you answered the part that I was looking for and that is reduced growth of moss.

Will the roof end up looking quite shiny when it rains?

Shiney like a tiled floor just after it's been moped kinda shiney? Hummm, it does have it's ascetic appeal if that is your preference? Not significantly more than a rough clay tile, I wouldn't think so.
