I am doing up a property and installing a solid fuel rayburn for the heating and hot water. I also want to install an electric boiler as a back up to heat the property when it is empty as there will be noone there to top up the solid fuel! any ideas on the best way to lay out the pipework?

Would and equaliser tank be my best bet??

Why don't you have an "automatic" boiler to heat the water/heating, using the hot water storage tank if you have one? By automatic I mean either a natural gas boiler or kerosene if you are in the sticks!
Please say exactly what type of a plumbing layout you have so the guys here have a clearer picture of your property?
