I live in an old cottage and have stained the ledge and plank doors that I made with some old pine flooring. I used Ronseal dark oak. You will find that the same stain will come out differently on different batches of pine. Its the same with the oak flooring that I have laid. The same stain looks completely different in some rooms.
The best thing to do is test it out on a small section first. Pine tends to come out with a slight orange tinge. Its really a matter of what colour you like best. The more coats you use the darker it gets.
