Hi, to swap a radiator do you need to be gas safe registered to turn off the boiler , drain down the system, fit new radiator then the re-fill by the filling loop under the boiler.

Not at all.....in fact once the pressure has been released from your system, the draining down could be minimal too.
Turn the other rads off to minimise air locks.
John :)

Thanks is an upstairs radiator so maybe just drain the upstairs pipework and radiators but not downstairs?

Absolutely, no need to give yourself unnecessary graft!
Carpets away, Tupperware dishes ready and a few old towels on stand by.

If its the same size, close the valves, drain rad (or get help and stick thumb over ends) take outside, drain and remove tails and fit these into new rad then fit. Easy done.

Its a different sized radiator so will have to alter the pipework under the floorboards and come back up, just wasn't sure if you needed to be gas safe to do this.
