bought 1 of the above from screwfix and fitted it today.

Followed instructions and interent to check wiring and all went together no prob.

When testing new extension, using current house phone which is about 10yr old, I had speak functions on both ringing out and incoming calls but no bell sound
However it works fine when plugged into socket as normal

Then, when I plugged a new phone into the extension I had just done, everything worked fine including the bell sound????

confused :confused:

It is possible that terminal 3 (ring) is either open circuit or is crossed with another connection.
Older phones require terminals 2, 3 and 5 to function properly but modern ones may function with just 2 and 5.
Terminal 4 isn't often required but is connected for convention.
Can you upload some piccys?

cant do the pics mate as not there now :( be a few days before im back

top of my head the extension was wired:

blue = TERMINAL 2
orange = TERMINAL 3
white with orange stripe = TERMINAL4
white with blue stripe = TERMINAL5

1&6 nothing

Piggy back thingy just plugged straight into existing socket

Surely if anything was wired incorrectly or open circuit then both phones would give same problems or am i mistaken???

cheers again :D

Some phones rely on the ring signal generated from the master socket on terminal 3 to ring.
Modern phones such as DECT can function without this. Also using microfilters can alleviate the need for connection with the master socket.
Your wiring follows the normal convention, terminals 1 and 6 would have green and white/green respectively if they were connected but they are not required for normal phone lines.

had another quick look on web and have read something along the lines of

the BT master socket or NTE5 contain a capacitor and this is what is used to generate the ringing signal required for certain phones to "ring" If you put one of these signal depandant phones into an extension that I have used, there is no capacitor in the extension hence no ring signal can be generated

this is how I understand it??

Does it make sense and answer my own question LOL

cheers :D

As you have connected 4 core cable the extension should carry the ring signal from the master socket to the extension socket, you should only have one master socket per phone line.
If only pins 2 and 5 were connected on your extension then the ring signal wouldn't be carried through.
