I have a toilet upstairs and have adjusted the float so that the water level is approx 1" below the top of the internal overflow pipe. However when we flush one of the other toilets (downstairs cloak or ensuite) the water level in the cistern rises and the toilet overflows, there has been no work carried out on any of the toilets for a few years. Any thoughts?

Maybe it's a low pressure valve on a high pressure supply, a surge as the others close off just might overcome the valve. Only a guess mind you :D

What sort of valve is it, traditional ball valve, torbeck float valve, etc. ? Also why did you adjust it?

I would be inclined to change the washer or diaphragm depending on your valve as they are so cheap and are what stop the flow of water into the cistern.
