two way lighting nightmare

hi all,

can any body help me i have moved an existing switch from one side of the room to the other. but i am only gettin power to the upstairs switch if i put the downstairs switch on first they are not working independantly of each other!! in the upstairs switch i have a single red into the common and the live(red) into L1 and the switching live black into L2 downstairs i have the black into the common and the red live into L1 and the black neutral nito L2 is this ok can anybody help i am at my wits end!!!
