...and now we know why.

The corrupt Tory party are up their usual tricks.

Why am I not surprised?

How anyone can vote for that bunch of sleaze-bags is beyond me.
Agreed but..

As opposed to a different bunch of sleaze bags? Haven't they all got their snouts in the trough..

TBH, it would be shear stupidity of the highest level to ban brand names or logos on packet of cigarettes, how would shops identify one brand from another if they were all packaged in plain white paper? We are not buying fish & chips wrapped in plain white paper are we? This nonsense has nothing whatsoever to do with what health risks from cigarettes or anything for that matter it is plain stupidity, it can't be anything else, and I am glad that this impractical approach to curb or to stop promoting smoking is not a right approach.

Dangers of smoking should be taught in schools, and to some extent parental responsibility, after that adults can choose what they want to do with their lives.

Either completely outlaw them altogether or just leave tobacco industry alone.

Why not legalise coke and heroin then? Let adults make their own minds up?

Tobacco kills more people than all the other legal and illegal drugs combined.

We are only talking 100,000 plus deaths per year.

Can you imagine if terrorism killed the equivalent of a large town every year? Year in and year out.

A tidy box doesnt make a difference between whether people will smoke or not. Im a big fan of the old F1 ciggie liveries, like the JPS or Camel Lotus and Senna's Marlboro McLaren. Lotus started bringing it back, good memories of the old cars. Doesnt mean Im going to start smoking.

Well someone's got to say it, so I guess I’m in the barrel again. Where do you draw the line?

It's like they say about porn; “I can't define it but I know it when I see it”. Talking of which...

STDs are killing and crippling millions too, so let's only use our nob for procreation shall we? (or a safe 'let’s be frank'?) The food and fatties we’re generating these days, with corresponding lack of exercise, are killing the latest generation before their time. It’s maybe not such a topic drift to go onto drugs in sport next, declaring open season on anabolic steroids and see a fit black man do the 100 meters in 7.8 seconds before his heart explodes?

The truth is, if you ask a dozen people where they draw the line you’d probably get a dozen different opinions. I have a vague memory of a report back in the days of Olga Korbet, (did I mention I’m nearly 55?). And it was along the lines of a question, or poll, of athletes at the time which went something like “If you took a drug which would kill or maim you but launch you to a gold medal, would you take it?”

The overwhelming reply should not come as any surprise because the necessary obsessive work and dedication to duty would probably mean if you said no you probably also don’t have the right gold-winning attitude. And so, I’ll get to my point, ‘we’ have to protect ‘them’ against themselves. Don’t we?

As a 16 year old in Oz I was heavily influenced by the Marlboro Man, which was a big factor in my taking up the habit. Plain packaging takes the romantic attraction away.

The Marlboro Man died of lung cancer.

wouldnt it be nice if every cigarette was hand rolled on a production line employing a Million workers throughout cigarette industry, and it would keep a million people employed and for Govt to stop all unfair duty or taxes on them, instead that money could be used to pay workers.

That would solve half our unemployment.

When I was "preparing" to give up smoking a few years ago, I did a very simple calculation - 20+ years at 20+ a day (you always round up!!) means I'd smoked 150,000+ of these things. Forget the health aspect, forget the money, forget all the other traditional reasons to stop - these are of little relevance to an addict.

Just reflect on that number - 150,000+. It's effing huge!! I'd done something stupid a fraction of a million times.

If anything helps to dissuade anyone else from that route, then it's got to be worth a punt.

Why stop at cigarettes and tobacco products though? Let's have a ban on advertising alcohol related products. We can all go doon the pub/club and tell the barman/maid, I'll have a pint of whatever's in that pump, etc (because they won't have markings on saying what brew they contain) Want a bottle of whisky? Plain brown wrapper on that and vodka, gin, brandy etc.

Big Tone makes a valuable point " ‘we’ have to protect ‘them’ against themselves. Don’t we?"

But ask yourself this,, "Who's the ' WE' doing the bloody protecting?" and are you sure they are protecting you? (mair likely protecting their own interests)

PS, as a non smoker, it makes no difference to me whether they decide to sell cigarettes in a plain wrapper, but I'm smart enough to realise that the government make quite a big income from taxation on tobacco products. If they lose this taxation, just what are they going to raise taxation on to make up the shortfall? The way successive government's are carrying on, it won't be many years before basic food is a luxury item, heavily taxed (just to keep us thin)

Or you could look at it another way, someone who smokes 30+ a day, he surely must be spending some crazy money like well over £10 a day, and that is £300 a month, it is like you buying a brand new laptop each month and putting it straight into your rubbish bin. But of I was to ask a smoker to please buy me a laptop that I would appreciate for the next 5 years, he would simply tell me to heck off! Imagine all that appreciation and praises i would have for him for the next 5 years, I would sing his praises every Sunday!
