Upvc door handle

Need to replace handle on front door. Total novice at this!

I understand that I need to get the right size by measuring the various distances etc - but how do I know whether I need a handle that is sprung without first removing the existing handle?

You won't, just remove the handle to see if theres a spring cassette in there too.

Not really, it just helps the handle come back up, generally the spring in the lock mech does that, but they found with the solid brass scrolled type handles were too heavy for the spring and eventually the lever would sag as the spring couldn't cope hence the helper spring, nowadays handles are aluminium, your choice really but it doesn't hurt to have them
