I'm in the process of painting the woodwork on my house, stained hardwood windows and 3 dormers. What tools do I need to make this an easier job than sanding by hand with a block - are detail sanders any use?
You say the windows are hardwood and you intend to paint them, if this is the case Don't breakthrough the existing finish as this is also acting as a knotting agent.
If you do expose any bare timber you should. Spot prime with a aluminium primer before you undercoat, as for tools you may find a detail sander useful also a shavehook could come in handy, but in all honesty sanding by hand is often the better option.
