I've been a Sky customer for many years and have seen my subscription fee creeping up to its current level of around £60.

Bloke in the pub is telling me that I can get better value with Virgin and I can still get Sky Sports?

I'm confused!

Virgin is trying to compete with Sky. The Tivo box is clever and a definite step in the right direction. However, after being a Sky user you'll be frustrated by the step backwards in usability. It feels awkward and disjointed compared to simplicity of Sky+HD. The other thing for me is picture quality.... Sorry to say it, but in my own experience from visiting customers homes, Virgin sucks.

On anything bigger than a 32" set their SD picture looks like YouTube video and the HD picture looks no better than Freeview SD. This was reconfirmed from recent experience at a site that went from a Virgin Media V+ HD box (which was rubbish PQ) to a Tivo box which is still rubbish. There's no lack in the download speed either; it's 18 meg. So it's not as if there's not enough bandwidth available to support decent SD and HD streaming. Netflix and Apple iTunes both manage to stream HD at 720p and 1080p respectfully over a much slower connection. Virgin: Very disappointing I'm afraid.
