Have just bought a 40yo house with unit under. The floor boards creak etc. so bad, the windows and light fittings rattle in the unit underneath. People upstairs are just walking normally, but it sounds as if they are stamping and jumping. Cannot access floorboards from underneath. They creak everywhere - with each step.

Also, any ideas on how to further noise proof the unit?

StaceyB,

We got all the floorboards re-nailed down - which stopped most of the creaks.

We are also going to get balsa board and nail it to the floorboards. That will help with noise and also stop the creaks. We are putting carpet down with a thick underlay.

I am quite confident that that will be the end of our problems.

Hope this helps.

my freind who re nailed the floor is a joiner and he said something along the lines of what u said - i just wanted to see what someone else thought , the re nailing hasnt worked for us . its v annoying as i am sure u know, i feel like screaming when my boyfreind goes up stairs is awful. i will let u know how we get on but i def think we are going to have to have all new boards re layed.

Sorry Stacey,

It is masonite we are getting, not balsa board. We found there is already masonite in the kitchen and we have never had a problem with the kitchen - it is sound proof and creek proof.

Getting new boards could be very expensive.

Good luck

i have been quoted £500.00 thats includes boards and labour !

he didnt say what type of boards he wud use though - i am going to mention that board what u said thou - see what he says - i will let u know

ladies ... :)

never let a tradesman nailed down boards .. they need screwing down at 400 spacings with counter sunk wood screws ,double that if diying ..
hope this may help :)

HI
ORGINALLY THE BOARDS WERE NAILED DOWN THAT WAS DONE BEFORE WE GOT THE HOUSE.

SO THEN MY FREIND IAN - HAS SCREWED THEM DOWN - IT HAS WORKED IN THE BATHROOMS BUT NONE OF THE BEDROOMS.

SO WE ARE GOING TO GET ALL THE FLOORING RE DONE AND C WHAT HAPPENS .
