Hello Everybody,

I have replaced the rear wheel bearings on my 1997 VW Polo.

Prior to refitting the drum, I fully retracted the brake shoes by lifting up the wedge key - as per instructions in Haynes manual.

My question is: Will the wedge key automatically reset itself when the brake pedal is depressed?

Any information would be most welcome.

Many thanks

Jimmy

In a word, yes, it will....some of them tend to have a mind of their own though, but the good news is you can hook the adjuster down through a stud bolt hole in the drum if its having a bad day.
The chances are, it will self adjust - its always a good idea to wire brush the grooves on the tapered adjuster so they grip well.

No probs mate - I should have said that a scriber poked through a stud hole in the drum can connect with the bottom of the wedge - where the spring hooks on to - if you need to yank the adjuster down.
Typically VW - this is one of the most reliable self adjusting mechanisms around!
