I hope this is okay in this section as I thought it was more appropriate than the car section.

Anyway, hello folks.

I'm VAT registered and am thinking of part-exing my van against a new one.
My question is - when you are given a px value can you add the VAT to it or will the dealer expect the price they offer you to include the VAT?

Thanks

Pete

The dealer will offer you a price, if you are vat registered then you charge them vat on the bid and you issue a vat invoice for their purchase from you.

Their invoice will show everything plus vat so unless they offer you vat inclusive prices when discussing the deal it is reasonable and expected that you add vat to everything on a commercial transaction such as this. When they sell your p/x it will also be plus vat.

eg - purchase price £10,000 plus vat, px £5000 plus vat, changeover is £5000 plus vat

They would not offer you a px as £5000 inc vat unless the salesperson is looking for a way to trick you ( surely not ) and if you are unsure then then check with another dealer

hope this helps
