I changed a washer on my bathroom sink tap, turned back on water at the stopcock and now i have got water hammer everytime we turn off any tap in the house.. I work in the plumb center and have asjed various plumbers how to fix this and they have all said turn the water off at the stop cock and only turn it on as far as needed for the water to come through. i have tried this and it has not worked..

Any ideas ?.

I recon its the Jumper in the mains stopcock.

If you have an long screwdriver then stick it to your ear (handle way Round) and listen to the stopcock you will know if that where the sound is generated from.

Went to a customer the other day with exactly the same problem. When I removed the head from the stop tap, there wasn't a washer in there. It must have disintegrated over time, and the jumper (washer carrier) was banging each time a tap was turned off.

Maybe when you operated your stop tap, the washer inside fell apart, and now the jumper is moving around.
