Severn Trent Water installation instructions refer to "Using scribing tool on copper pipework or liner insert with plastic pipework, prior to fitting "Smartfit"".
I do not understand "using scribing tool".
Any advice please?

It usually means a thing with a sharp, fine point, usually in hardened steel. You can use it like a pencil, to draw lines or write on softer metals such as copper. It is handy to use for parts identification when you are taking things apart, especially if you are going to clean or polish them so dirt marks will no longer identifty fitting surfaces.

I am guessing they mean draw a mark to show the depth of an insert.

You probably could use an ordinary pencil, but the marks will rub off when handled.

I often use a Stabilo multi-surface permanent marking pen now. It looks like a fibre-tip but will write on glass, brass, white plastic tape or skin and doesn't come off easily.
