I’m considering getting a water softener. Options are one with an output flow rate of 40 l/m, and considerably more expensive one with an output flow rate of 66 l/m. The salesman of the second one said that if I ever wanted a combi boiler, the first one wouldn’t provide a high enough flow rate. I don’t know what the current mains flow rate is but it doesn’t feel remotely ‘weak’.

My current condensing boiler is 18kw. Is the salesman’s claim that 40 l/m is insufficient for a combi boiler accurate?

The average combi boiler will heat between 10 and 18 litres a minute depending on output. He's having a bubble ;)

Find out, because there are plenty of properties than can't get 40 litres per minute from the cold supply anyway.
Get a 10 litre bucket and see how long it takes to fill with an outside or kitchen tap wide open.

The part about the combi is lies.

Given that the person selling the water softener either knows they are lying, or knows nothing about the products they are selling, you should buy elsewhere.

Did he also ask if you wanted (or must have) a price for new double-glazing?
