Hi my friends metal water tank directly above the copper hot water cylinder is leaking.

what we want to know is it safe to replace this with a modern plastic 1?

What size do we need?

Is it ok to move higher up into the loft which would mean extending the vent pipe from copper hot water cylinder?

We are not certain about the system, other than there is a vent pipe from the copper cylinder to the leaking tank. There is another tank in the loft which feeds the rads. The metal tank which is leaking feeds the hot water cylinder. We dont have any problem with basic plumbing and no alterations are being made to the system, just that the tank has had it!.

There's no problem moving the tank up into the loft an this would probably give you a greater head of water at your hot outlets. You do mind have to make sure that the tanks weight is adequately supported and distrubuted evenly, any platform you make should have free air space underneath also. (drill a few tiny holes thro the timbers ;) ) next one if any cold water draw off are attached to the metal tank make sure these are lower than the hot draw offs (new regs this that little girl got scaleded to death!!) Don't be tempeted to drill through the bottom for pipeworks or burn your holes thro with a bit of copper pipe you will get trouble.. An as for the sizing only you can know that, you've got the tank there. How much water do you need? Other than that good look :)

Thanks Plummerman.

As for tank size was thinking of the tiny loft hole! because the exsisting water tank above the hot water cylinder is a MONSTER!!

Have a look at coffin tanks. You can get one to fit through quite a small loft hatch.
