The previous owner of our house has painted the black plastic gutters and down pipes with white paint.

Some of this is coming away, and as we can't afford to replace them just yet, what is the best paint to use to touch them up?

Cheers

non drip gloss

but scrape off the loose material first, and clean with wire wool and white spirit.

There is no need to undercoat plastic if using oil based gloss.

JohnD is correct that you will need to remove loose paint first. Rather than wire wool I would use Webrax, it is essentially the same kinda thing as the green stuff on the back of a washing up sponge, alternatively a flexible sandpaper will suffice.

Would be a good idea to wash any green mold off with bleach the day before applying the paint.

When an alkyd based paint system breaks down on such a substrate, it is often a sign that an undercoat was applied, if memory serves me correct it would be as far back as 1974/75 when ICI did extensive research into the painting of such surfaces. Their findings were that such surfaces should be only washed using a mild detergent and there was neither a need for abrasion or the application of an undercoat.

There is no good reason, the painting of such surfaces should be able to blend in with regard to the existing decor.

White gloss.

What?

White glossed drainpipes?

Don't think so.

Drainpipes are painted black for a good reason.

I think drainpipes and guttering look better in black, but what's the 'good reason'?

Aesthetics and practicality. Good design is the perfect marriage of form and function.

The good reason is that anything outside which is painted in white gloss is going to look grubby/dirty for much of the time, unless you are so obsessively houseproud that you wipe down your drainpipes and guttering every week...which no sane person does.

Grey plastic just looks as though it have come straight from a factory without any more thought being given to the final effect.

Black looks classy, doesn't look dirty and goes with almost any other colour.

Are you people mad.?

Painting guttering??? Are you serious???
Surely any reasonable minded human being would not be discussing which paint to use but advising you not to.

Save up and buy new FFS.
